Buddy Rizer Discusses Data Center Trends at DICE

Recently, DED Director Buddy Rizer spoke on a panel at DICE, a data center conference sponsored by BisNow. This year’s event featured more than 500 data center, real estate and facilities professionals discussing the latest trends in data center investment, engineering and development.
Rizer’s panel focused on data center location and discussed potential considerations that companies make when choosing where to build, and pitfalls that they run into. The need for inexpensive, abundant power was discussed, along with the importance energy efficiency in the building process. With data centers occupying such a large footprint and requiring a great amount of electricity and cooling, the point was made that not making these buildings as efficient as possible is tantamount to throwing money away.
The need for speed in construction was another hot issue in the discussion. Rizer touted the county’s development process, which he sees as one of Loudoun County’s main advantages, saying, “We believe you can come into our community and get a data center up and running quicker than anywhere else in the country.”
A quick development process doesn’t only apply to data centers, though; our Fast-Track Commercial Incentive Program is available for businesses opening up in many of our targeted industries, including information communication technology, federal government contractors and agencies, aerospace and airport-supportive businesses and projects supporting those industry groups.
Throughout the panel there were discussions of best practices, best locations, and what jurisdictions needed to bring to the table to attract data centers. One issue was never in question however: Loudoun’s status as one of the premier data center locations in the country– if not the world. As Steve Altizer of Compu Dynamics simply said, “Everybody wants to move to Ashburn.”
