Equinix Data Centers Rally Around Untapped Loudoun Students

Equinix data centers community support Mobile Hope Back to School

The economic benefits of Loudoun County’s data centers are well-documented, including hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue and tens of thousands of high-paying jobs.

But those numbers don’t fully capture the community benefits that data centers provide. Take Equinix Data Centers, for example, which hold monthly community impact events at the Ashburn campus, including an August lunch that benefits Mobile Hope of Loudoun, a charity for vulnerable and homeless children in Loudoun County.

Much like the rest of the U.S., students in Loudoun are gearing up for another school year, and Mobile Hope helps provide everything from food and shelter, to clothes and school supplies. Despite Loudoun’s reputation as having the highest median income in the U.S. for more than a decade, Mobile Hope has worked with the Loudoun County Public School system to identify 2,400 students that lacked a fixed, stable and adequate nighttime residence.

“We do everything that we do for our biological kids, from socks, shoes and hygiene, to secure housing. We get them jobs through our Youth Employment Services. We work with the kids to get them resumes to get them prepared for the job market,” said Donna Fortier, Mobile Hope’s CEO and founder. “Here are organizations and individuals coming in and interacting with our kids, which helps them understand that the community does care.”

The Equinix lunch included a partnership with DSW Shoes in Leesburg to provide money for shoes in time for the new school year. In addition to each $40 donation, DSW Leesburg agreed to discount an additional $5.

“Our company put in the seed money of $1,500 and we were able to work with DSW,” explained Amber Davison, sales operations global accounts for Equinix. “With this and the money we raised so far, we’re looking at about 100 pairs of brand new tennis shoes for the kids to wear on their first day of school.”

In addition to their work with Mobile Hope, Equinix is also a partner to non-profit causes like Boulder Crest Retreat, American Red Cross, Generosity Feeds, Wine to Water, Women Giving Back, and Loudoun County Public Schools.
