Galang AI Proves Impact Is About People, Not Just Technology
It’s easy to get lost in the jargon of AI agents and digital transformation. But in Loudoun, a new kind of company is proving that the most successful AI integration is more about people than it is code.
Galang AI is a Loudoun-grown, AI-native firm that was named a 2026 SWaMmy Honors recipient by the Virginia Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity (SBSD), less than a year after it was founded.
Incorporated on August 11, 2025, the company grew from a desire to do things differently. For co-founder James Galang, the path began years earlier with practical operations work, automation, and a growing conviction that AI could help small teams achieve outsized impact.
“I didn’t want to be an entrepreneur,” James states. “My brother introduced me to AI. He was always the entrepreneur. I took on several roles over the years where I used AI to streamline processes. One day, I took a step back from things and that’s when I realized that I could do turn this into a business.”
James began his career as a lab technician and later joined an IT Consulting Firm early in its growth after his brother introduced him to the company’s founder. He helped build the operational foundation and government-contracting narrative as the consultancy grew from about $800k to more than $60 million in revenue. While supporting federal programs, James learned automation and implemented AI solutions that streamlined work, including helping consolidate four teams into a single unit on a large federal program. That experience showed him he could build a services company around practical AI adoption. Thus, Galang AI was born.
James and Ara, the company’s co-founder and majority owner, lead a small, distributed team designed to stay close to clients and use AI as a force multiplier. Galang AI has supported Brambleton Community Association through pro bono community-service marketing and communications projects. The company’s broader work now spans AI operations, automation, cloud, knowledge systems, and digital modernization across commercial, community, public-sector, and regulated environments. This commitment to practical impact and giving back played a crucial role in helping Galang AI earn the honor.
The SWaMmy recognition also helped raise Galang AI’s visibility, but the company has continued to build credibility through delivery, certifications, and partnerships. Since then, Galang AI has been approved as a Launch Loudoun AI technical services provider, formed an official AI enablement partnership with Theiagen Genomics, become an authorized Zapier Silver Solution Partner, joined the OpenAI Partner Network, Google Cloud Partner program, Microsoft AI Cloud Partner Program, and AWS Partner Network, earned SBA Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) and Economically Disadvantaged Women-Owned Small Business (EDWOSB) certifications, and been recognized by InternshipsVA as an InVAluable Employer Partner. The momentum builds on its Virginia SWaM certification, CMMC Level 1 self-assessment, and 2026 SWaMmy Honors recognition.
“My parents are first-generation immigrants,” James reflects. “They started at McDonald’s and later built careers in accounting. We really appreciate what they did and can’t pretend to understand what they went through to give us a life here. Starting a business has shown us that there are different ways to provide for a family, and it has been freeing and empowering to show our generation—and the generations before us—what’s possible.”
James also places a strong emphasis on safe and responsible AI adoption. Galang AI builds human-in-the-loop review into its work and supports governance aligned with evolving standards such as the NIST AI Risk Management Framework. James believes AI should be a tool that serves humans, not the other way around.
Despite their rapid growth, James and Ara remain focused on a grounded future: serving their community, staying true to their family-led values, and proving that with the right tools, a small team can achieve outsized impact. They may establish a physical office one day, but the goal is not growth for growth’s sake. They want to remain a close-knit, AI-native company that knows its people and stays close to the work.
“Building a business is not something you can do on your own,” James emphasizes. “There are resources and support systems out there, like the APEX Accelerators and Loudoun Economic Development, that helped open opportunities for us. We want to be that same kind of resource for others.”
When communities support small, women-owned, and minority-owned (SWaM) businesses, they are building a stronger supply chain of high-value service providers. Ara pursued Virginia SWaM certification to compete for opportunities and take full advantage of the support, training, and resources available to certified businesses. Galang AI has since also earned federal SBA WOSB and EDWOSB certifications, expanding its eligibility for qualifying federal opportunities.
