How MG Moving Services is Thinking Beyond the Box and Redefining an Industry

What if a moving company wasn’t just a moving company? What if it was a platform for growth, a place for employees to thrive, and a force for positive change?

This is the story of MG Moving Services, a company that is challenging the status quo and proving that with the right strategy and a whole lot of grit, you can survive a tough market and build a growth-driven organization that people are proud to be a part of.

When Brett Burks acquired My Guys Moving 13 years ago, it was called “Two Guys and a Truck,” a modest operation with loads of potential waiting to take shape. While the company saw steady growth, the real transformation began in August 2023 when Brett brought in his friend and long-time industry colleague, Steve Kuhn, as acting CEO.

Steve, who previously helped increase another moving company’s revenue by over $35 million, saw something more than just trucks and boxes. He saw an opportunity to build a corporation that happened to be in the moving industry. Within his first six months, he implemented a strategic rebrand from My Guys Moving to MG Moving Services, taking on a fresher, more corporate look that reflected a new standard of quality and professionalism.

“When the company chose to invest in my playbook of historical service values, it marked a pivotal turning point,” reflected Steve. “With major investments in new equipment, upgraded facilities, enhanced employee benefits, and comprehensive training and development, it became clear that our brand needed to evolve. While our legacy brand was beloved and steeped in history, it no longer reflected the scale or sophistication of who we had become. We needed a brand that could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with national firms, and one that clearly signals to customers, partners, and the industry that we are a premier force in the world of moving and storage. This isn’t just a refresh. It’s a reintroduction—backed by values, built by experience, and driven by a commitment to excellence that has never wavered.”

A brand is only as good as the people behind it. Recognizing this, Steve and his leadership team, including Director of Operations Mike Kuhn and Marketing Director Andy Lopez, focused on building a culture that inspired buy-in at every level.

“Steve always says that movers have never historically had a great reputation,” shared Mike. “He has played a large role in changing that. He’s not in the business of moving; he is in the business of building corporations that happen to be in the moving industry.”

This new vision wasn’t just a marketing campaign—it was a fundamental shift in philosophy and an investment in the community that they call home. The changes didn’t go unnoticed. MG Moving Services has a near perfect Google rating from over 1,700 reviews. The company also invested $3 million in trucks over the past two years and recently expanded their Loudoun footprint, combining two warehouses into one, increasing their Sterling space from 15,000SF to 60,000SF. The expansion was led by Mike Kuhn.

The team also learned that in order to get people to care, you have to create an environment where they feel valued and empowered. They instituted five core values—Teamwork, Discipline, Honor, Respect, and Own It—and made it clear that every single person, from the newest hire to the C-suite, was equally important.

This is their living philosophy. Leadership’s doors are always open, creating a culture of problem-solving and collaboration. The changes were tangible on the crew level, too. Drivers were given reliable, brand-new trucks and updated safety training, which instilled a sense of accountability and pride in their work.

“I’m now in my fourth decade of building an independent moving company to levels rarely seen in our industry. While much of that growth is evident in the numbers, with substantial increases in revenue, the true story runs deeper,” said Steve. “It’s not just about growth, it’s about how that growth happened. In an industry where high-quality, professional service isn’t always the norm, we’ve always built a brand that refreshes expectations. But the real secret? It’s not the strategies or the equipment, it’s the people.”

The results speak for themselves. In an industry that has seen a 20% decline in demand over the past decade, Mike said that MG Moving Services is up 10% year over year since 2023. The company has also become an attractive place to work. Where once there were no applicants for summer jobs, college students now actively seek out part-time work, citing the company’s positive brand image on social media. MG Moving Services has even launched high school recruitment and internship programs, investing in the next generation of the workforce.

The growth didn’t come without challenges. The company bought franchise locations to ensure brand consistency and quality control, a move that required significant investment and a long-term rebuild. The leadership team also had to navigate different market challenges, like labor shortages in Richmond and competitor oversaturation in Florida, by leveraging digital marketing and building strong relationships with realtors.

But through it all, they’ve stuck to their vision. For Steve Kuhn, it all comes back to unlocking potential. He believes that by investing in people, you can achieve anything.

“Everything changes when you find the right people and treat them well,” Steve stated. “That means giving hardworking individuals a real chance to succeed, offering benefits that are uncommon in most blue-collar environments, investing in training that unlocks potential many never imagined they had, and simply living by the golden rule—treating people with dignity and respect, especially in roles where that’s not always expected. Over the years, I’ve seen firsthand what happens when people feel valued and empowered. They rise. They grow. And they help grow the business—naturally, sometimes unexpectedly, and always meaningfully.”

Andy Lopez, who has grown from a social media manager to Marketing Director, credits Steve with giving him the opportunity to “grow out of discomfort.” His advice to others is simple: “Don’t be afraid to jump. You don’t know your capabilities unless you try.”

And from Mike Kuhn, who grew up watching his father, Steve, navigate the industry, comes a piece of wisdom from his grandma: “Don’t let anyone outwork you.”

MG Moving Services shows what’s possible when you prioritize people over profit. Steve Kuhn’s first day in 2023 came with the promise: “It won’t be comfortable, but it will be worth it.” He shook up the expectations of what they knew and laid the foundation of a strategic vision, unyielding grit, and culture of ownership, creating a recipe for continued success. The company’s commitment to community and its employees has resulted in unprecedented employee retention.

“We had to get out of that one-dimensional mindset,” Mike shared. “It’s how you build your own economy.”

MG Moving Services held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate their expansion in October 2025.
