Loudoun’s 2015 Spring Farm Tour May 16-17
You’re invited to experience Loudoun County, Virginia farms and wineries during the 2015 Spring Farm Tour, May 16-17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Brochures listing participating businesses are available at county libraries and community centers, and online at Loudounfarms.org/Farmtour.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to taste and learn about food from the ground to the grill,” said Loudoun Agricultural Development Officer Kellie Hinkle. “It’s also a chance to buy handmade, artisan products right from the people who make them.”
Self-guided tours will allow visitors to hold baby chicks, pet heritage rabbits, walk alpacas, ride ponies, spin wool by hand, or go on a farm scavenger hunt. More than a dozen of the 40-plus venues are pet-friendly, so the whole family can enjoy the Loudoun countryside during this weekend event.
Both old and new will be on display during the Spring Farm Tour. Hinkle explained, “Some of the businesses on the tour make products like wine, mead and herbal remedies using traditional methods that are hundreds of years old. Others practice state-of-the-art organic, sustainable farming, or – in the case of Wegmeyer Farms in Hamilton – use an innovative plasticulture growing system on strawberry fields. The Spring Farm Tour is educational as well as delicious.”
A number of venues will feature live musical performances, and events include the Purcellville Music and Arts Festival, and the Waterford Farm and Village Days. There are also several new businesses participating this year, such as Lucia Farm and Zion Farm in Lovettsville, Independence Homestead and Faith Like a Mustard Seed Farm in Leesburg, and the Sprout Therapeutic Riding and Education Center in Aldie.
