The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors has approved the sale of county-owned property to RagingWire Data Centers for $20 million. The 75.4-acre Ashburn, Virginia parcel, which the company plans to develop into a 750,000 square-foot data center complex, is located in the area of the county known as “data center alley” for its high concentration of data centers.

“The county bought this land for $13.5 million in 2004,” explained the Chairman of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Scott York. “A portion of this property will provide a much-needed school site. Now with this sale to RagingWire, the rest of the property has been returned to the tax rolls and will be the location of a major economic development project that will yield up to $16 million in additional tax revenue per year.”

“The purchase of the property was subject to several provisions, including development timelines and design standards to ensure the types of development that the county envisioned on the site,” explained Loudoun County Department of Economic Development Director Tom Flynn.

In July, Governor Bob McDonnell and the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors cut the ribbon on RagingWire’s first Loudoun location, a 150,000 square-foot data center in Ashburn.

“This new deal reaffirms our commitment to Loudoun County,” said RagingWire founder and CEO George Macricostas. “We believe that Loudoun is the right location for us to expand our business operations complimenting our flagship 500,000 square-foot data center in Sacramento, California and our newest facility in Ashburn, Virginia.”

Matt Letourneau, the chairman of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Economic Development Committee, stated, “Our goal since taking office has been to increase the commercial tax base by making Loudoun the most business-friendly county in the most business-friendly state in the U.S. This deal makes sense for our taxpayers and helps strengthen our position as the leader in the data center market.”

“Loudoun has welcomed us to the area and made it easier for us to do business,” Macricostas added. “We appreciate the personal support of the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors and the Department of Economic Development.”

Loudoun County Department of Economic Development Assistant Director Buddy Rizer commented, “Congratulations to RagingWire for their success in Loudoun County. We appreciate RagingWire’s commitment to Loudoun. Their investment in this campus is significant as we work hard to remain a world-class choice for technology companies.”
